ABOUT OUR ORGANIZATION

Giving Back To Those Who Serve Others

In 2018, the Diakonos Foundation established Serving the Servant Day to recognize and honor often-overlooked caregivers. This day aims to raise awareness about the sacrifices caregivers make and to express our gratitude with a gesture of appreciation. The Diakonos Foundation is committed to leading this initiative to celebrate and acknowledge the dedication of both current and former caregivers.

A “diakonos” is someone who carries out tasks for the benefit of someone else.

Our Mission & Vision

Mission

We need each other

To make a positive difference in the lives of every caregiver by offering acknowledgment, encouragement, and a dedicated day of recognition. This special day, the day before Labor Day, will celebrate each caregiver's commitment and exceptional care for their loved ones.

Vision

Serving the Servant recognizes that caregivers often experience isolation while managing and caring for a loved one. By fostering a support system and community for non-traditional caregivers, the organization aims to raise awareness and highlight the crucial role of in-home care.

FOUNDER & VISIONARY

Ruby Reynolds is a servant leader. She has worked tirelessly for many years in her community serving in ministry and various organizations. Raised in a family where compassion was a core value, she learned the principles of caregiving early on by helping her mother care for her grandmother and great aunts and later by supporting her siblings with terminal illnesses. Aware that breaks and moments of rest are often scarce, Ruby founded Serving the Servant Day to honor and recognize the invaluable contributions of caregivers.

In 2022, Ruby was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by President Joe Biden for her lifelong dedication to strengthening the nation through volunteer service.

In 2023, Sylvester Turner, Mayor of Houston, issued a proclamation designating the day before Labor Day as Serving the Servant Day in Houston, TX.
